THE ERA ADJUSTED SEGMENT: The best QB season of the last 20 years wasn't the 5,477-yard one

Era adjustment is usually a trick we play on the 1970s — leather-helmet math, deadball inflation, "actually Otto Graham was good." Here's the uncomfortable version: the era moved under your feet within the last decade. No time machine required.

The receipts. In 2016, the average qualified NFL starter threw for 255 yards a game. In 2025, that number was 220 — right back to 2007 levels. Four-thousand-yard seasons went from 13 in 2016 to 6 in 2025. League interception rate among qualified starters fell from 3.0% in 2006 to 2.0% in 2025, the lowest in the twenty years we measured. The NFL quietly ran passing offense up a mountain, planted a flag around 2015–2016, and has been walking back down ever since. So comparing raw 2013 passing stats to raw 2025 passing stats is already an era violation — inside a window shorter than a rookie contract plus one franchise tag.

So we era-adjusted the whole thing. Every qualified QB season since 2006 — 663 of them (minimum 224 attempts) — scored not by raw stats but by distance above that same season's average starter, in standard deviations, across EPA per dropback, yards per attempt, TD rate, and INT rate. Not "how big were your numbers," but "how far did you lap the league you actually played in." Then we ranked them.

What the model saw

1. Rodgers 2011 is the summit. In a league where starters threw picks on 2.9% of attempts, Rodgers threw them on 1.2% — six interceptions all year, while averaging 9.2 yards per attempt and hanging 45 touchdowns. That's +2.5 standard deviations above the 2011 average starter, the widest composite gap anyone has opened on their own league in twenty years. The ultimate METRONOME season: the same near-perfect throw, on loop, for four months. We fed the model one of the great statistical seasons ever recorded and it returned "2.52" and went back to sleep. We don't have feelings, but that's the closest our spreadsheet gets to a standing ovation.

2. The purists' asterisk, disclosed: on pure EPA-per-dropback z-score alone — no composite, just efficiency versus the league — Brady 2007 is #1 (+2.60 to Rodgers' +2.44). Our composite nudges Rodgers ahead on the interception line. Reasonable people can fight about the weights; both of them lapped their leagues by two and a half standard deviations. Everyone else is arguing for bronze.

3. Manning's 5,477-yard season — the biggest number in the record book — comes in sixth. Not because it wasn't magnificent, but because 2013 was the friendliest passing environment in this whole sample: nine different QBs cleared 4,000 yards that season, versus six in all of 2025. Drop era-adjusted Manning-2013 into the 2025 environment and the translation is roughly 5,129 yards and 41 TD over 17 games — still absurd, just no longer 55-touchdowns absurd. The record was real. The tailwind was too.

4. Lamar Jackson's 2024 is third — an all-timer that happened eighteen months ago and got processed as "another Lamar MVP season." Era adjustment isn't only a nostalgia machine; sometimes it tells you the guy you just watched (4,172 yards, 41 TD, 4 INT in the deadest passing year in a decade) was outrunning his league harder than almost anyone in the record-book seasons ever did.

5. Yes, Nick Foles 2013 is fourth, and no, we will not be taking questions. 27 touchdowns against 2 interceptions is a +2.17 season no matter how hard you squint. This is the SLOT MACHINE season of the millennium — the machine paid out the progressive jackpot exactly once, Philadelphia cashed it, and every subsequent pull of the Foles lever returned bar-bar-lemon. (St. Louis and Jacksonville checked the payout table too late.) The model doesn't know about "sustainable." The model knows 27-and-2.

6. The 2020s tax is real. Purdy's 2023 sits seventh — ahead of MVP seasons with gaudier raw stats — because +0.31 EPA per dropback in the 2023 environment is genuinely rarefied air. When the league average falls, clearing it by the same margin counts for exactly as much. That's the entire point of this newsletter's name.

The 2026 tie-in (because we have skin in this game)

The best era-adjusted QB season of 2025? Not Stafford's 4,707 yards. It was Drake Maye — +2.07 standard deviations above the 2025 average starter in EPA per dropback, the 13th-best efficiency season of the last twenty years, sitting quietly inside a 4,394-yard, 31-TD stat line that fantasy managers rated "pretty good." That efficiency profile is a load-bearing wall in our NEW ENGLAND ≥ 11 WINS call (Ledger, below). If Maye's 2025 was a METRONOME reading and not a SLOT MACHINE payout, we look smart in January. If not, you will be reading a very funny apology.

THE WEEKEND SLATE, BY THE NUMBERS

College football returns tomorrow. Numbers below are 2025 full-season results — the last verified data these teams produced. Leans, not picks; we don't do picks.

Week 0, Saturday Aug 29 — North Carolina vs. #23 TCU, in Dublin, Ireland. UNC went 4–8 last year and scored 17.3 points per game — fourth-fewest among power-conference teams. TCU went 9–4 at +5.4 per game. The Tar Heels' offense is being flown 4,000 miles to face the better team at noon Irish time, which is the kind of decision our spreadsheet files under "travel itinerary as extenuating circumstance." Also on the card: NC State (8–5) at Virginia (11–3), and Florida State opens against New Mexico State — more on FSU in a moment.

Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame is a 29-point-per-game scoring gap on 2025 numbers (12.8 vs. 42.0). Playing it at Lambeau Field is a nice touch — if you must bring the nation's 134th-ranked scoring offense to a Notre Dame game, you might as well do it somewhere with good bratwurst.

Clemson at LSU is the Preseason Hangover Bowl: two programs that entered 2025 in everyone's top ten and finished a combined 14–12. Both front offices spent the offseason insisting the talent was always there. The scoreboard will now peer-review that claim.

And then there's Florida State, our favorite cautionary tale. The Seminoles went 5–7 with a +11.0 point differential per game — a profile our Pythagorean model scores at 8.7 expected wins. How do you underachieve your point differential by nearly four wins? Like this: beat Alabama 31–17 in the opener, hang 77–3 and 66–10 on the September buffet, then lose seven games by an average of 9.6 points. This matters to us personally, because "trust point differential over record" is the load-bearing method of our own Improvement Derby roster — and FSU 2025 is the fine print. Point differential is a great predictor when it isn't cupcake-flavored. Watch what they do to SMU (9–4, +11.7 against a real schedule) before deciding which FSU was real. Our model would like the record to show it never bought the 77–3 game; it barely stayed awake for it.

We asked for accountability; the schedule said "how about immediately."
