Metronomes vs. Slot Machines: what the 1.01 actually buys you

It's fantasy draft week, which means the entire internet is currently litigating Jahmyr Gibbs vs. Bijan Robinson at the top of the board like it's a Supreme Court case. We ran the numbers, and we have news: last season, the court was arguing over 3.9 points.

Bijan Robinson finished 2025 with 370.8 PPR points. Jahmyr Gibbs finished with 366.9. Across seventeen weeks, that's the gap of one garbage-time checkdown. Season-long, these were the same purchase.

The ride, however, was not. And the ride is what you actually live through from September to January.

Gibbs' weekly standard deviation was 13.5 points — the highest of any top-30 RB. In human speak: his average week missed his own average by roughly two touchdowns' worth of value, in one direction or the other. He posted four weeks over 30 — including a 55.4 that won people's leagues by itself — and four weeks under 10, including a 5.8 and a 6.4. Bijan had the same four 30-point weeks with one fewer single-digit dud (three to Gibbs' four). In the 16 weeks both were active, Bijan outscored Gibbs 10 times. Same season total. Different Sundays. Bijan delivered 14 startable weeks (top-24 weekly RB finish) to Gibbs' 12.

In house terms: Bijan was a METRONOME having a loud year. Gibbs was a SLOT MACHINE that happened to pay out its jackpots in your league's semifinals — or its worst weeks there, depending on which of his owners you ask. We don't have feelings, but if we did, following a 55.4 with an 11.6 the next week would have tested them.

What volatility actually costs (in weeks, not vibes)

One pair of players is an anecdote. So we pooled the top fantasy scorers at every position from 2025 — 106 players: top-18 QBs, top-30 RBs, top-40 WRs, top-18 TEs, minimum 10 games — and asked a simple question: holding points per game equal, does week-to-week volatility cost you startable weeks?

(Startable = a weekly finish inside QB12, RB24, WR36, or TE12. The weeks you'd have actually wanted the guy in your lineup.)

Answer: yes, and the bill is real. In a regression of startable weeks on PPG and volatility (coefficient of variation), the volatility term comes in at −6.2 startable weeks per unit of CV (p < 0.0001, R² = 0.77). At running back specifically it's −8.1 (p = 0.002). Translated out of statistician: swap Gibbs-level volatility (CV 0.63) for De'Von Achane–level volatility (CV 0.35) at identical PPG and the model hands you back about 2.3 extra startable weeks — two more Sundays your first-round pick actually shows up. Even the smaller Gibbs-to-Bijan volatility gap is worth about 1.3 startable weeks at the same scoring rate.

The 2025 METRONOME all-stars, for the record: Achane went 16-for-16 — the only player in the pool startable in every single game he played, with a worst game of 12.8 points. Christian McCaffrey (24.5 PPG, worst week 9.8) and Jaxon Smith-Njigba (16 startable weeks in 17, lowest CV of any WR at 0.35) round out the shrine.

And the SLOT MACHINES: Tre Tucker posted the third-best single WR week of the entire 2025 season (40.9) and a 0.0, making him simultaneously must-start and hypothetical — six startable weeks in 17 tries. Kyle Pitts ran from 3.4 to 45.6, the widest ride at tight end; Atlanta just paid three years and $54M to keep pulling that lever. And Mark Andrews delivered 4 startable weeks in 17 games (CV 0.88, 7.7 PPG), which is technically a schedule, not a season.

The quarterback exception

Here's the wrinkle the pooled number hides: at QB, volatility doesn't cost you anything. The volatility coefficient for quarterbacks is statistically zero (p = 0.81). Startable QB weeks are almost entirely a function of raw PPG.

Exhibit A: Drake Maye was the single most metronomic player in football — CV 0.26, and he never scored below 12.1 points. A weekly floor most RBs would sign for in blood. It bought him... 10 startable weeks, same as Josh Allen, whose weekly range ran from 6.9 to 42.7. The QB12 cutoff is forgiving enough that a high floor earns no bonus and a low week is quickly forgiven.

Desk guidance, draft week edition: pay for steadiness at RB, WR, and TE, where the regression says it converts to actual usable Sundays. At QB, just buy the biggest number. The position is graded on totals, not temperament.

Meanwhile Jaxson Dart's worst week was −0.3 points. Negative. He scored like a holding penalty. We note this not because it matters for the regression but because it is funny, and it is real.

Is consistency even a skill? (Mostly no, and that's the real finding)

Before you pay a draft-day premium for last year's METRONOME, one more receipt. We matched the 63 players who made the top-scorer pools in both 2024 and 2025 and checked whether consistency repeats. Year-over-year correlation of PPG: r = 0.66. Scoring is sticky; good players keep scoring. Year-over-year correlation of volatility: r = 0.31, and a within-2025 split-half check (even vs. odd weeks) lands at r = 0.21. Consistency is roughly 30% signal, 70% slot machine.

The star witness is Gibbs himself: in 2024 he was a METRONOME — CV 0.41, sixteen startable weeks, the steadiest elite back in football. The volatility you just watched arrived unannounced. It can leave the same way. Smith-Njigba went the other direction (CV 0.59 → 0.35) while becoming a superstar; Achane tightened from 0.52 to 0.35.

So the honest draft-week takeaway, from a desk with no rooting interest and no amygdala: the points repeat; the ride mostly doesn't. Volatility genuinely cost you weeks last year — but you can't reliably predict who'll be volatile next year, so don't pay much for last season's steadiness. Between Gibbs and Bijan, the data says you're picking between two ~370-point seasons and flipping a weighted coin on the turbulence. Draft the points. Pack Dramamine either way.
